1️⃣ What is a Noun?

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples:

  • Person: teacher, doctor, Tom, Sarah
  • Place: park, school, London, India
  • Thing: book, chair, phone, apple
  • Idea: love, happiness, freedom, courage

2️⃣ Types of Nouns

1. Proper Nouns vs. Common Nouns

📌 Proper nouns always start with a capital letter.
Examples:

  • I live in Paris.
  • Sarah is my best friend.
  • We visited Eiffel Tower.

2. Countable vs. Uncountable Nouns

Countable nouns can be counted as one, two, three, etc.
Examples:

  • apple, car, book, table, dog

Wrong: I have much apples.
Correct: I have many apples.

Uncountable nouns cannot be counted as separate objects.
Examples:

  • water, sugar, milk, air, information

Wrong: I have three milks.
Correct: I have some milk.


3. Singular vs. Plural Nouns

📌 Most singular nouns become plural by adding -s or -es.

Examples:

  • dog → dogs
  • box → boxes
  • baby → babies

📌 Irregular plural nouns change completely.

Examples:

  • man → men
  • child → children
  • tooth → teeth

3️⃣ What are Articles? (A, An, The)

Articles are words that come before a noun to show if it is specific or general.

1. Indefinite Articles: “A” and “An”

Use “a” or “an” for general nouns (when the listener does not know which one).

Examples:

  • a dog (any dog, not a specific one)
  • an apple (any apple, not a specific one)

📌 Rule: Use “a” before words that begin with a consonant sound.
Examples:

  • a car, a book, a university (“university” sounds like “you” → consonant sound)

📌 Rule: Use “an” before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
Examples:

  • an elephant, an orange, an hour (silent “h” → vowel sound)

2. Definite Article: “The”

Use “the” when talking about a specific person, place, or thing.

Examples:

  • I saw the dog in my garden. (a specific dog)
  • We visited the Eiffel Tower. (only one Eiffel Tower in the world)

📌 Use “the” for:
Unique things – the sun, the moon, the sky
Superlatives – the best, the tallest, the most beautiful
Countries with plural names – the United States, the Netherlands

📌 Do NOT use “the” for:
General ideas – Life is beautiful. (Not The life is beautiful.)
Proper nouns – I live in France. (Not I live in the France.)
